“We must remember that one determined person can make a significant difference, and that a small group of determined people can change the course of history.” Welcome to the Spring edition of Westside Notes. After many years of facilitating therapy groups and workshops, I recently became a Certified Group Psychotherapist (CGP) which either tells me that I’ve accumulated more wisdom and experience or I’m simply growing old or possibly both. This ezine is dedicated to the many facets of groups and group organizations which have become an integral part of my professional life. Group Therapy Conferences in Review In March I attended the American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA) conference in New York City, and once again it was a vibrant and enriching experience. It’s actually a 6-day conference, but I attended the second half after visiting family in Philadelphia earlier in the week. AGPA offers both didactic and experiential workshops lead by the masters in the field as well as the opportunity to participate in demonstration groups and mix with other dynamic group therapists from around the country. The highlight for me was an all-day seminar with Esther Perel, author of Mating in Captivity. In early April the Group Psychotherapy Association of Los Angeles (GPALA) hosted a one-day conference entitled The Roads Merge: Where Addiction Recovery Meets Group Therapy, and it was a resounding success. As moderator and coordinator of the event, I witnessed the true experience of teamwork as we invited group therapists and addiction professionals to spend the day together. GPALA plans to continue the momentum with addiction-related workshops in the future, and I’m so grateful for having this opportunity to be a part of it.

Chart of the Month: Some clients who participate in 12-step programs don’t understand group therapy, and some clients who participate in group therapy don’t understand 12-step groups so I developed this brief chart outlining some of the differences between them: Group Therapy vs. 12-Step Meetings.
Resource of the Month: For the past several years I’ve been collaborating with a fantastic virtual assistant named Mike Johnsen who is based in the Seattle area. Although most of our contact is by phone and email, I did have the chance to meet him in person a few years ago, and Mike is truly a “salt of the earth” person and a very reliable and talented assistant. You may ask, “What does a virtual assistant do?” Many things, but Mike has been my technological guru as he designed this ezine, updates my websites, keeps my contact management system up-to-date, and much more. If you’re interested in speaking with Mike, I strongly recommend him, and he can be reached at 425.772.9618 or mike@yvassistant.com or www.yvassistant.com. If you prefer not to receive future mailings, simply unsubscribe below and I look forward to connecting in other ways. In the meantime, enjoy the rest of the spring season. Gratefully, Andrew |
