Westside Notes

“One hundred percent of the shots you don't take don't go in.”
                                                     — Wayne Gretzky

Welcome to the summer edition of Westside Notes. Although the above quote comes from a legendary hockey player, it reminds me of the determination and perseverance of the soccer players in the recent World Cup. Because I’m a fan of anything related to Spain, it was incredibly inspiring and contagious to watch the Spaniards win the event for the first time in history and to transcend the skeptics as they proved that coming out on top is always possible in spite of the odds against you.

Introducing New Associate

Most of you know that I’ve been very fortunate to work with some really talented associates in my therapy practice, and once again, I’m very pleased to introduce a new intern, Edward Hunt, M.A. into the practice. He is a 2010 graduate of Antioch University’s Masters in Psychology program and brings an excellent clinical foundation as well as wisdom and experience from his own personal and professional journeys. Please visit our website for more details, www.westsidetherapist.com/eddie and keep in mind that he offers a sliding scale as well as morning and evening appointments.

Therapy Group Now Forming

I’m currently scheduling consultations for prospective candidates for my brand-new Westside therapy group (general process group for men & women). I hope to get it off the ground by early September, and it will meet every Monday from 6-7:30pm in my Westside office. It’s intended for clients who have individual therapy experience under their belt and are looking for the therapeutic support and feedback available in a group setting. For more details, please contact me at 310.281.8681 or andrew@westsidetherapist.com.

Resource of the Month:
Clearview Women’s Center

Since Clearview Treatment Center opened, I’ve been witness to its cutting-edge development led by founder, Michael Roy, and Clearview continues to provide holistic, integrative treatment with integrity and professionalism. As a former facilitator of a weekly coaching group in the intensive outpatient program, I saw the effects of the program first-hand, and the new Women’s Center for Emotional Regulation (a 6-bed residential home in Venice) exemplifies Michaels’ vision to meet an unmet need once again in the treatment community. Radio Interview on Sexual Addiction

On June 13th I was interviewed on the Free Your Mind radio show on AM 830 here in Los Angeles, and you can listen to the archived interview by clicking here. The purpose of this Sunday morning show is to de-stigmatize mental illness and related issues, and I found the interviewers engaging and knowledgeable with a dash of radio personality humor. If you have a moment, please check out a few minutes of it and let me know what you think.

Upcoming Speaking Appearances

Recently, most of my speaking engagements have been focused on sexual addiction as well as coaching-related topics. On September 10th I’ll be speaking at AYARN, the Adolescent and Young Adult Resource Network here in Venice, CA, and I have a few other Fall dates in the works. I’ve also been invited each semester for the past few years to speak about sexual addiction treatment as a guest lecturer for the Chicago School of Professional Psychology (formerly California Graduate Institute) human sexuality program. If you’re interested in attending any of my presentations, please let me know and I can share more with you or click here for specific information.
